Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2019 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

Located on Dalry Road, the Black Hoof is a multi-function wholesale/deli/takeaway/tapas operation. Run by the indefatigable Carlos, an ex-pat Catalan who has cooked his way around the globe, it’s a one-man mission to bring top-quality Iberian cured meats to Edinburgh. For those after a quick refuel there are made-to-order bocadillo (baguettes filled with Spanish specialities) to sit-in or takeaway, while the tapas menu has a dozen or so dishes to linger over. A good-value daily tapas menu offers Spanish tomato bread, ham and olives, along with a selection of 3 tapas and a dessert. However, it’s the hand-carved, acorn-fed Iberian ham that is the main draw here and Carlos will happily wax lyrical about the production, provenance and quality of his beloved jamón. A weekly masterclass offers the chance to learn more and to sample their selection, with optional tapas meal to follow. With the added attraction of BYOB, the Black Hoof may have just cracked the recipe for an unusual, educational and tasty group night out.
