Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2018 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £7.95 (+p&p).

A Southside newcomer offering aromatic Lebanese cuisine, Beirut Star is set in a small venue where punctilious staff dressed up in black bring a whiff of quaint formality. There is a myriad of cold and warm mezzes – from the staple hummus, tabbouleh and musakaa, to the ingredient-focused tomato and nut salad with pomegranate syrup. It may take some time to comb through the long list of foods, but once the order hits the table you’ll see the payoff is great. A triad of Beirut specialties are the prime dishes, including an admirable spinach lamb – an ingredient that can easily be overcooked, the spinach retains a freshness and flavour in this dish, punctuated by a zesty sauce. Food from the grill, such as the lamb and chicken skewers and shawarmas, are essentially uncomplicated dishes, which the Beirut Star has boosted with minute touches of immense effect, such as the fresh herbs added to the kafta. Unless you’re sticking solely to the mezzes, best to brace yourself for a feast as the food comes in serious portions.
