Daytime café and cool night-time bar at Kelvinbridge from the Fergus McVicar stable.

Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2019 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

Another one from Fergus McVicar (Chinaski’s, Tabac, Alchemilla), Bananamoon has the tell-tale signs: compact, stylish, laid-back, hip without hurting too much, musically minded. It’s on a good corner, with perches outside offering a bit of al fresco action as it edges round to a townhouse quadrant wrapping round the big church. The bar is small but packs a knowledgeable punch. A boarded cocktail list is supertight, but bartenders here know their stuff – you say 'Gibson Martini', they’ll say 'how dry?' Lots of work on the place has created a good-looker – clean contemporary lines, light woods and soft tones, washed with purple neon at night, with big exterior awnings and venetian blinds, spiral staircase to a wee mezzanine. It nicely blurs the line between daytime café (sandwiches and platters) and evening bar (no food). After a couple of cocktails, outside lights spilling through the slats, Twin Peaks on the always-interesting playlist, it starts to feel like a bar of the future. Maybe soon others will catch up.
