Neighbourhood diner taking inspiration from Pacific Rim cuisines, from the USA to Japan, Korea and Thailand, with Hawaiian poke bowls in the mix.
Forget plastic hula garlands and cocktails in coconut shells – the tiki bar comes of age at this Pacific Rim-inspired joint. With its Hokusai-inspired walls, Honu instantly brings the sunshine with just-the-right-side-of-sweet pre-dinner cocktails with additions like green apple sorbet and honeyed tequila, plus nibbles of paprika pumpkin chips with fragrant mango salsa. From a menu that pairs deep-fried US dude food with Pan Asian greens and seasoning, start with nuggets of Korean chicken tossed in pungent gochujang sauce or pan-seared broccoli bought to life with a nutty sesame dressing. Fried chicken and waffles, doused in hot sauce and maple syrup with skin-on fries, might be 50 shades of brown – there's even the option to add hazelnut ice-cream – but it's an unbeatable plateful of comfort food. At the other end of the colour spectrum, Instagram-ready poke bowls are seasoned rice with pickled and cured veggies, nori, edamame and your choice of protein. From the concise dessert menu, ‘Rawnchy cake', made by a local free-from producer, brings a cheesecake of startlingly vivid colours with complex fruit flavours – a fitting end to a dinner equal parts sugar and spice.
Honu serves up global comfort food from around the Pacific Ocean; from panic fried chicken burgers, chicken & waffles to Thai curry and poke bowls. We have a great selection of wine and some classic cocktails with a Honu twist. Come join us.
