Bourbon specialist opposite the Barrowland Ballroom, doing US-inspired BBQ food and burgers.
Amid the dodgy kebab shops and smashed-up bus stops, Van Winkle feels like a bit of a refuge. The area's on the up with food and drink – BAaD in the Barras, St Luke's round the corner – slowly but surely. The gunboat grey exterior of this corner spot doesn’t give much away but inside is a bar with considerable appeal. American whiskey is the speciality, with over 80 decorating the gantry. Take them straight up or in cocktails – an Old Fashioned comes professionally prepped and pleasingly punchy. The menu is US-inspired, fairly simple stuff diligently done – burgers, wings, BBQ pit food, such as an enjoyable slice of (just enough) brisket, coming with fries and decent coleslaw. Everything is served on blue-rimmed enamel tableware, befitting the industrial stylings of chunky wood tables, corrugated metal and bare bulbs. It’s by-the-numbers design, but pleasant enough that couples and families visit (maybe not just before gigs at the Barrowlands opposite). Add in interesting draughts (Blue Moon, Brooklyn, Drygate), playlists of good indie rock, live blues music, a beer garden and bottomless wings on Wednesdays, and this place starts to shine.
