Compact café in Strathbungo specialising in a range of well-crafted breakfasts and brunches.

Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2018/19 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £7.95 (+p&p).

This diminutive café has been gaining popularity since it opened in spring 2017, and deservedly so. Co-owners Lorna Rae Sutton and Laura Stuart somehow manage to create perfect breakfast/brunch/lunch dishes that are comforting, delicate, delicious and photogenic in equal measure. Hearty toasts (from Strathaven’s excellent Alexander Taylor bakery) and folds of scrambled eggs are topped with thick slices of hot smoked salmon, or tenderstem broccoli with labneh, or garlic and thyme mushrooms, finished with sprinkles of pistachio or sesame seeds. There are thoughtful and well executed varieties of texture, colour and flavour in every dish. Sweet choices include hearty bakes and ‘hot cakes’ – fatboy pancakes topped with indulgent fruits and sauces. The short menu, devised by Laura, criss-crosses the globe and includes Hawaiian poke (marinated fish), Indian masala, Vietnamese banh mi, Lebanese za’atar, and Iranian pashmuk (sesame candyfloss). But it all works together thanks to confidence, skill and cleverness in a design-conscious, uber-cool space.
