Salt & Vinegar
Situated in the heart of Shawlands, serving piping hot fish and chips and a brilliant value lunch.
One year on from opening Salt and Vinegar has become a popular community presence in Shawlands and particularly so because of its outstanding value lunch and afternoon deal of a traditional Scottish fish tea consisting of fish and chips, tartare sauce, salad, bread and butter and a pot of tea – all for £5.95. The restaurant sits alongside the carryout chippie and the food benefits from literally being served straight from the deep fryer. Haddock and cod come in generously portioned, thickly flaking and succulent slices coated in some of the best batter in town and are indeed the star offerings. Alternative dishes such as risotto or curry can lack authenticity of flavour. The restaurant itself is comfortably laid out in small booths and fast efficient service is provided by cheerful staff. There is a straightforward drinks list with West’s St Mungo beer on offer; a drink which is even better with fish and chips than tea. The pudding menu is restricted to straightforward items such as ice-cream or apple pie, and starters are a bit hit and miss but the house specialty of fish and chips is undoubtedly worth a visit.
