Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2018 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £7.95 (+p&p).

Fair play to Birdtree & Bellfish – as Scottish restaurants in Glasgow go, this one stands out, if not always for the right reasons. Situated in a grand, if slightly hidden away corner of the Lorne Hotel on Sauchiehall Street, it’s all about food and drink that puts our national cuisine on the world stage – albeit not necessarily in the most positive light. Take a starter from their neat and very reasonably priced market menu, for instance, of Buckfast-glazed chicken chaat, which sounds like something that might happen among hungry revellers at a party at 4am. A cheese beano is meanwhile literally just that – no ironic deconstructions here, just a pile of molten cheddar and beans on a doorstep-thick slice of toasted white bread. Scotland’s other national drink goes into the batter of the Irn-Bru fish supper, which – between the pickled onions and mushy peas sides – is just some newspaper wrapping away from being a proper chippy dish. Speaking of the chippy, a deep-fried Mars Bar dessert, or ‘efter’, is tarted up with some rum and raisin ice-cream, but still a pure dead guilty pleasure.
