Replacing the fondly remembered Booly Mardy’s, this ‘bar and kitchen’ comes from experienced operator Lawrence McManus (Epicures, Nick’s, Old Salty’s – on Byres Road only after Finnieston closed recently), and looks-wise it has many of his hallmarks – brickwork, industrial trim and chunky wood. Unlike its predecessor, the bar’s not pitching itself as full-blown cocktail spot (though a menu is due and there’s expertise thanks to some ex-Booly’s staff). Emphasis is on dining, with a compact menu offering most dishes as small or main variants. Breads and snacks (crostini, pizette, bruschetta) serve as starters but the diminutive delivery means dipping into the sub-headed salads, fish and meat sections tapas-style is tempting – and generally rewarding. Intended stars shine while the accompaniments can occasionally be a distracting detraction – such as the workaday radish coleslaw with a good carpaccio that’s lively with capers, a rather odd mash choice alongside enjoyable meatballs or the not nearly enough chilli with the crab and chilli linguine. Elsewhere, lamb rump with borlotti and green beans may well be the menu’s highlight. Construction work on the pedestrianised no-through road outside continues, promising a sunny-day enticement to VinYard’s al fresco set-up.
