From the moment you’re welcomed in by the concierge at Dakota’s swish city-centre hotel, there’s a distinct feeling the staff truly care about your time here. There’s exacting detail at every step, from an exhaustive cocktail menu to the freshly baked bread and pomodoro sauce that arrives as you pore over an enticing menu in the low-lit basement restaurant. The à la carte has a selection of meat from the grill, fish and game dishes – all with flairs and twists that display a real commitment to seasonality and quality local ingredients. Take the halibut, served with sea purslane, samphire and wild garlic, with a delightfully fishy sauce with cockles and spoots – as fresh as if Poseidon had caught them himself. A sirloin steak is succulent, charred and caramelised, with the accompaniments dead on the money, too. Afterwards there’s a nigh-perfect crème caramel with blood orange, or George Mewes cheeses with chutney, truffled honey and piccalilli. The wine list is honed – with some excellent choices by the glass, a few affordable bottles, and some pricier bins. A very fine dining experience indeed.
