The Wind in the Willows meets New Town elegance for cocktails and a hearty meal.

Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2019/20 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

Enter through the sparkly willow arch and you’ll find yourself by the riverbank. The former home of Kenneth Grahame, creator of The Wind in the Willows, is now a relaxed but elegant badger-themed bar and restaurant. Choose from bar snacks or a restaurant menu both showcasing seasonal ingredients. Beetroot-cured salmon starts things on a high, paired successfully with horseradish, cornichons and pickled shallot, while a goat’s cheese parcel is elevated by pickled walnuts and spiced pear. The pies are popular here and rightly so; Cullen skink pie is generously filled with smoked haddock, leeks and new potatoes and topped with a wonderfully crunchy Isle of Mull cheddar crumb. Puddings are a little hit and miss though, so an after-dinner cocktail may be preferable. With opulent armchairs and a well-stocked bar, at Badger and Co you too can feel like Toad of Toad Hall.
