A red sandstone Victorian mansion, the Buccleuch Arms sits squarely beside the cricket green in the village of St Boswells. The bar does traditional snacks, while the hotel’s Blu Coo Bistrot & Bar puts a convincing Borders spin on French café dining. Wooden floors and blackboards create a stripped-back, contemporary look. The kitchen places local stars like Border roe deer, beef and lamb firmly centre stage, and adds a tasty supporting cast of bistrot favourites. Top-notch Aberdeen Angus from Hardiesmill farm goes into a bourguignon with boulangère potatoes, savoy cabbage and smoked bacon; while partridge and pheasant from the Lammermuirs come with a game syrup and dauphinoise. Desserts, or excellent cheeses and ice-creams from Doddington’s in Wooler, are a fitting closing flourish.
