There is fantastic home-baking at the Dandelion Café. Piled on the counter are plates of scones, biscuits, brownies, butterscotch blondies, and a glass cabinet filled with creamy chocolate cakes, rocky road slices and mini bakewells. There are always vegan and gluten-free cakes, too. The café fits the converted tennis pavilion in Newlands Park like it has always been there, with its old-time Arts and Crafts café feel and its veranda perfect for dog walkers to take a welcome coffee break – with a dog-muffin for the pooch as well. The menu is deceptively simple, with food that is generous and well presented, while retaining a pleasing homely feel, like the homemade baked beans with eggs from a local small holding, or the thick and hearty soups garnished with fresh herbs. Made to order sandwiches include salt beef on rye bread, and brie and bacon jam, the bacon jam being a sweet and smoky, sticky, meaty delight, slow-cooked on the premises to a secret recipe. With baking classes for children and craft fairs and art showings in the pipeline, Dandelion has big plans for the future.
