A popular family restaurant with engaging décor, a friendly atmosphere and generous portions

Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2018 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £7.95 (+p&p).

This place is about belt-busting generosity and good times. On most nights this Southside diner is likely to be hosting at least one family celebration and quite possibly the first XI of some notable team or other – the walls are emblazoned with signed football shirts of all hues and owner Mimmo is well connected with players past and present. An almost full-size Bridge of Sighs marks the start of a recent extension and there is even a tropical fish in a tank. Pastas and pizzas dominate the menu along with burgers and some fish, chicken and pork options. Main portions are enough to fill up on but there are some nice light starters such as a simple tomato bruschetta and a delicious gamberoni aglio olio peperoncino – chillied king prawns. For those with diets, the pastas can all be made gluten-free; but there is not a huge choice for the veggies – although the fusilli contadina, chargrilled vegetables in a creamy tomato sauce, is a richly satisfying meat-free option. Desserts, such as soufflé and tartufo – ice-cream with meringue – are not made in-house. Great atmosphere, lovely staff, good food.
