Some excellent Borders’ food and drink might front up at various stalls on Castle Terrace of an Edinburgh Saturday morning, but there’s a good deal more than that happening in situ. Take Born in the Borders, a converted farm steading on the banks of the River Teviot. After starting life in 2011 as a brewery (using barley grown on the surrounding Chesters estate) there’s now a farm shop/deli and a café engagingly fitted out with chunky wood and muted, rustic hues. Hearty morning brunch overlaps with simple but appetising lunchtime dishes such as steak and ale pie, or Drayman’s lunch using Chevington cheese and sourdough, and day long there is coffee, fresh bread and cakes. It’s a focussed offering, made notable by sound preparation and local sourcing.
