At the southernmost tip of Orkney, on a cliff overlooking the Pentland Firth, family-run Skerries Bistro is a modern, glass-walled restaurant serving bistro fare with a focus on fish and shellfish. Owners Carole and Hamish Mowatt have run the restaurant since 2007, and have built a reputation for cooking excellent produce simply and in a friendly informal atmosphere. Orkney fish and shellfish is prominent: the menu is packed with hand-dived scallops, Scapa Flow langoustines, fresh haddock and mackerel, and salmon smoked in-house by Hamish himself. Lobster and crabs are brought in daily at Burwick Harbour, just two miles away. New for 2015, the ‘Dining Pod’ is a private dining space in the restaurant’s grounds, providing a novel way to experience the chef’s six-course tasting menu.
