The island of Westray has worked hard to become a Fairtrade island, with the latest development being Westray Chutney’s launch of 11 certified Fairtrade chutneys and preserves. From sweet mango preserve to date and apple chutney, each product is made in small batches containing a minimum of 80% Fairtrade products – no mean feat for a tiny island far removed from any exotic fruit growers. The business operates from a unit in Pierowall in the north of the island (which also doubles up as a fishmonger and, on Wednesday and Saturday evenings, a fish and chip shop) where you can buy the chutneys direct from their source. For those who can’t make the trip to Westray, the chutneys are available online and in outlets throughout Orkney.
