A&M stands for Angus and Michael MacMillan, two brothers originally from the island of Barra who, with Michael’s wife Mairi, are responsible for this new-ish (August 2014) fishmongers in Yorkhill. The island connection is very much in evidence, with most of the shellfish sourced from North Uist, and non-fishy items like black pudding and oatcakes from Stornoway on Lewis. There’s a regular supply of ultra-fresh white fish and salmon, most of it from the West Coast, while prawns, scampi and crabmeat are available semi-prepared or in the natural state, fresh or frozen. A friendly welcome extends to bilingual chat (Gaelic-speaking Glasgow residents will appreciate the chance to practice) as well as detailed information about the provenance of everything in the shop – in either language.
