Opened in spring 2013, the Kail-Yard is a modern extension of the Black Bull pub – run by the same proprietors since the mid-00s – in the village of Tarbolton seven miles north-east of Ayr. They bring a carefully considered fine-dining experience to an area of the Ayrshire countryside undernourished for quality restaurants, utilising plenty of Scottish produce, locally sourced where possible. It's done in a way that’s welcoming to diners of most dispositions and budgets, both in terms of its laid-back and unpretentious if slightly predictable (tartan carpets) look and feel, and at relatively reasonable prices. You can’t fault them for offering choice – 13 starters and 11 mains on the à la carte alone. Standouts from the former include a crispy deep-fried goat's cheese and fig spring roll pastry and smoked haddock fish cakes with leaf salad and coarse grain mustard. The mains are generous, nearly to a fault with roast breast of Gressingham duck unduly dwarfed by their roast chicory and croquette potato sides. A dessert of vanilla crème brûlée topped with a scoop of Woody’s Ayrshire ice cream maintains the generally high standard.
