On a site with a proud foodie heritage (it was formerly home to the award-wining Butler & Co deli), a burger joint might seem like a step down – but Blackhorn isn't serving any old burgers. All core ingredients, from the meat for the hand-made burgers to the ice-cream in the milk shakes, is sourced from local firms. Although their habit of cutting hotdogs in half is a little odd for a purist, the texture and flavour is makes up for it. They are right to keep the recipe for their Blackhorn sauce a closely guarded secret as it adds real zip and zing to the burgers – and the decision to retain the wraps first created by the previous tenants is a good one as they add variety to the menu, particularly for vegetarians.
