Fisherman Kenny Bain established what is now Skye's only remaining oyster farm in 1981, in Loch Harport on the west coast of the island. In 2008 his son-in-law Paul McGlynn took over and expanded production to just under two million oysters - but over half were decimated by disease in 2011. Rather than close the doors, the decision was made to diversify into a farm shop and, since 2014, a hot food takeaway. The farm now sells most of its oysters from the shop, either to takeaway or to eat on site, as well as to a handful of local restaurants including The Three Chimneys, the Stein Inn and Harbour View in Portree. Hot takeaway food includes mussels, scallops and a local seafood platter. The farm shop sells a range of cheese from the Isle of Mull and Orkney that includes blue, waxed truckles, smoked and whisky flavoured, as well as game from Skye and the Highlands, and patés, mustards and vinegars made by a friend. The main line, however, is the seafood - a huge selection of wet fish; shellfish including live crabs, squat lobsters and clams; and smoked and cured fish and shellfish including scallops, sea trout, oysters and salted herring.
