Mostly volunteer-run, Bleachingfield Cafe services the community centre and library, as well as being popular with post-school run parents. A community initiative, volunteers get involved with the cooking and the day-to-day running, providing ideas for specials and for baking. Local produce is used across the menu where possible - the cafe has strong links with the local fishmonger, butcher and greengrocer, eggs are free-range, and they'll happily use up garden surplus from local allotments. The simple menu includes a variety of home-baked cakes, filled rolls, sandwiches and jacket potatoes, as well as main meals including meatballs and citrus chicken salad, and daily specials. As well as the cafe, the kitchen organises community food events, from themed supper club evenings to free cooking lessons, and provides training to staff and volunteers looking to make a career out of cooking. It can also be booked by other local groups, and used for parties and events.
