A smartly sustainable cafe and farm shop opened in spring 2012, The Woodhouse take reducing, reusing and recycling seriously: cafe tables were built from two great elms, felled by disease; cushions are made from old family jumpers, coffee grounds are turned into compost and photovoltaic panels provide electricity. The food in the farm shop is short on miles too: T & R Skinner, the local butcher, run a counter well supplied with their pies and Extraordinary Sausages (in flavours like mango, pomegranate and chilli or pear, black pudding and field mushroom), preserves are home-made, and there are local beers, eggs and artisan bread on the shelves. A good cheese selection comes from Scotland and further afield. In the coffee shop the local sourcing continues across a menu of soups, sandwiches, platters and more substantial mains, with a tart, sandwich, hot main, salad and soup of the day calling on seasonal produce. A wood-burning stove and an emphasis on home-baking and good coffee give all-year round appeal.
