Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2019/20 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

Riverhill’s successful café-deli in Helensburgh was followed by a great coffee bar in Glasgow, and now their all-day diner in the Clydeside resort town answers many locals’ prayers for a quality, attractive and rather hip place, whether for breakfast, a brew and cake or a full evening blow-out. Up a discreet alleyway, and housed in a B-listed former warehouse, the Courtyard is a rather special venue, beautifully restored, with skylights illuminating a large mezzanined, brick-lined space, filled with the sounds of a busy, open kitchen and happy diners hubbubbing. Imaginative and well-prepared food demonstrates a passionate kitchen using quality produce, all delivered to the table in a logistically applaudable variety of tableware. A rustic duo of mackerel and smoked salmon pâté is attractive in kilner jars with flatbread spikes, top-notch pizzas come on tin trays, gourmet burgers cooked on a ceramic barbecue are speared atop wooden boards – including ‘the pig’, an enjoyable chorizo-infused pattie topped with pulled pork, with bacon pieces in the sweet brioche bun – and, in an enamelled cup, oily but addictive deep-fried, battered dill slices are the stuff of serious cravings – as are many of the homemade cakes and bakes. A great dining experience, which wouldn’t be out of place in any major city’s must-visit eateries.
