Old-fashioned American comfort food and cocktails in a buzzy and sociable shopping mall.

Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2019/20 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

A shopping mall seems an apt location in which to find this US-style diner – from the local owners of mall-mates Barça and Obu. And being in swish Princes Square means NY American Grill is much more upmarket than the usual food court offering. Despite its long bar and longer cocktail list, there's a family-friendly vibe, with solid, substantial furnishings in heavy wood, and an equally solid, and lengthy, menu. The focus is on meat, with steaks, chicken and skewers cooked off on their Josper grill, or hot dogs and burgers that come stacked high with toppings. A good proportion of the dishes have bypassed the grill and gone straight through the fryer, such as the Southern comfort food classic of fried chicken with waffles, drizzled with maple syrup and soaked in country style gravy with a fresh salad garnish that adds colour to the plate. If there’s space, the terrace seating has a buzzier, more social atmosphere than the plusher and slightly more formal dining area inside.
