Farm Stock (Scotland) Ltd
Not open to the public.
Farm Stock (Scotland) Ltd is a farmers’ co-operative owned equally by six regional livestock marketing groups. It was created in 1996 by Scott Country Lamb joining together with Buccleuch Farmers and was then strengthened further by Lothian Lamb joining in 1999. Galloway Lamb and Ayrshire Lamb joined in 2005 and the current structure was completed by Caledonian Organics joining in December 2009. Each of the six member groups owns one share in Farm Stock and each group is in turn owned by anything between 100 and 250 individual farmers. The six groups retain their own local identity whilst gaining the economies of scale resulting from co-operation of over 1000 farmers in terms of marketing prime stock on a deadweight basis. The co-operative undertakes the marketing of over 100,000 sheep and 3,000 cattle per annum, including organic varieties, primarily on behalf of the members of the three farmers groups which own Farm Stock (Scotland) Ltd. Since it began trading, Farm Stock has handled over 1.75 million lambs and 70,000 cattle and it currently supplies a wide variety of abattoirs throughout the UK with the objective of obtaining the best possible returns for its members.
