Springbank Distillery is unique. It is the oldest independent family owned distillery in Scotland. Founded in 1828 on the site of Archibald Mitchell's illicit still, the Springbank Distillery is now in the hands of his great-great-great-grandson, Hedley G. Wright. Springbank claims to be the only distillery in Scotland to have never chill-filtered its whisky, and the only single distillery to produce three different malts using three different production methods. Instead of offering different bottlings of the same whisky, Springbank produces three quite different malts. Springbank itself has a mixture of fruity and briny characteristics. Longrow was created to see if it was possible to produce an Islay-style malt on the mainland, and the use of peat-dried malt gives it greater smoke. Hazelburn is at the opposite end of the smoke spectrum, using unpeated barley for a lighter and fruitier character. All three are available in a variety of bottlings.
