Pickering's Gin

Edinburgh's first gin distillery in 150 years launched Pickerings' Gin in March 2014. The Summerhall Distillery might be new and shiny, but the recipe is over 60 years old, hand-written on a scrap of paper in 1947. Tweaked and polished, the resulting gin is produced in small batches in 'Gert' the 500 litre still, using nine botanicals including juniper, coriander, cardamom and fennel. The distillery, in the thriving creative and artists' hub that is Summerhall, has been converted from dog kennels - a throwback to the days when the building was the Small Animal Hospital in the Dick Vet school. Guided tours and tastings lasting 45-50 minutes are available by appointment on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons. The £10 ticket price includes samples and a Pickering’s & Tonic in the Royal Dick bar, where, in another first, the gin is piped directly to a tap, all the quicker for pouring that G&T. It can also be bought in bottles on site, or ordered online.
