A whistle-stop tour of the Central and Southern Americas, a visit to Las Iguanas will make for a fun-filled night out with friends.

Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2019/20 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

Despite covering both hemispheres, this restaurant cantina cocktail punches above its weight on a panoramic tour of the Americas. With the moqueca at the Maracanã, these Iguanas love Brazil but scamper around Mexico, Peru and Argentina’s Gaucho grazing lands to complete the trip. The travel guide menu is helpfully indexed to navigate this express tour. Zesty Caipirinha is a fine aperitif and part of a decent selection available at very attractive less-than-a-fiver prices. Domenican goat curry is fiery but slow cooked to tenderness with coconut and Scotch bonnet chilli battling for supremacy. From Brazil’s cultural cradle comes Bahian coconut stew – it’s creamy and tender, needing just a twist of lime to take it from good to excellent. The only off-note is a curiously generous pinch of paprika in the coxinha but the crispy bacalhau balls save the day for the starters. It may have the air of a 1970’s departure lounge but think retro-glamour days of air travel, not Ryanair London Luton. With jaunty stewards getting endearingly lost in the menu’s tongue-twisters, the food and service will have you on-board soon enough.

Walk through the doors of Las Iguanas and find yourself transported to Latin America, full of rich, vibrant colours, quirky features and custom-made wooden mosaic tables made especially for the restaurant from sustainable woods in Brazil.

Each Las Iguanas restaurant is unique, and the staff love bringing unusual things back from their travels, ranging from large lobster sculptures, to giant drums. The philosophy of Las Iguanas is to serve delicious and authentic Latin American food and drink, in an environment which evokes the very best of Latin life.

With recipes dating back to the 16th century, the food successfully fuses native Latin American Indian, Spanish, Portuguese and African influences. Working hard to ensure that everything comes from the best possible source, Las Iguanas Glasgow is proud of its fresh GM-free food and top quality ingredients.
