Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2018 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £7.95 (+p&p).

With an entrance hidden behind some bins close to the M8 and a starkly lit interior that could charitably be described as ‘functional’, food lovers might not instinctively be drawn towards Asian Gourmet. But once you’re settled at a wipe-clean formica table, nibbling spice and vinegar-soused beansprouts while perusing the Biblical proportions menu, you’ll realize you chose well. Specialising in sinus-burning, euphoria-inducing Szechuan cuisine, Asian Gourmet offers up nose-to-tail dining in its truest sense. Shredded pig’s ear in a fierce chilli sauce and hot and spicy frog legs will keep adventurous eaters happy, while classics like deep-fried crab in a salted egg yolk crust and hand-made noodles with bean sauce are expertly handled. Vegetarians are surprisingly well catered for with the likes of jade tofu with spinach and starchy shredded potato with Chinese leeks, a pleasingly bland foil to all the complex spicing. Everything arrives in heaving portions and doggy bags are offered as standard to every defeated diner (believe us, it tastes even better the next day). Wash it all down with a free green tea or a frosty Tsing Tao and congratulate yourself on following your culinary instincts.
