This ice cream parlour is something of an institution in Sandgate. After generations of family ownership since the 1920s, Renaldo’s Old Fashioned Italian Ices is now owned by wife and husband Linda and Silvio Galli. With no additives and 97% fat-free, the couple pride themselves as producers of an ice cream, or rather gelato, that is healthier than most. This doesn’t limit taste and imagination though: 36 flavours are on offer including Creamy McCMallum's Crunch (with raspberry sauce and puff candy) and Rocky Road (chocolate and coconut with cherries, biscuits and marshmallows). The Old Fashioned Vanilla is arguably the most popular, sticking to the original 20s recipe and serves as the base for all other flavours. You can watch the team at work on a 'boiling day' and if coming from afar, pre-order your takeaway boxes to be 'hard frozen'.
An Ayr institution based at the top of the Sandgate since the 1920s, old-school family-owned Italian ice-cream shop Renaldo’s continues to thrive in an increasingly competitive market under the stewardship of husband and wife team Linda and Silvio Galli. Their traditional vanilla gelato, made with full cream milk and no additives or preservatives, remains their flagship product, boasting 3% fat per scoop compared to up to 15% fat in many other ice-cream products. If it’s a lick of something more exotic you seek, Renaldo’s more out-there flavours can include Red Cola, Bubblegum and Creamy McCallum Crunch (with added puff candy).
