Lerwick Brewing Co

The Mercer brothers' beers only launched in 2013, but by January 2014 John, Graham & Jimmy of the Lerwick Brewing Co had already signed a bottling deal with Cairngorm Brewery. All production still happens at their 12 barrel Shetland brewery, at a latitude of 60° north – the name of one of their two flagship brews. A golden, 4.8% Pilsner-style lager, like Skipper's Ticket it is suitable for vegans (isinglass-free). Named in recognition of the importance of seafaring to Shetland life and history, Skipper's Ticket is a delicate, chestnut-coloured version of a traditional dark beer. The final two beers are Buddies lager and beer, produced in partnership with and raising money for St Mirren FC. Closer to Bergen in Norway than it is to Edinburgh, Shetland has an ideal ambient temperature for brewing and storage, and excellent, soft water. Transport is, however a problem, so they have also combined forces with Valhalla Brewery, Shetland's first and only other brewery, to transport supplies like hops and barley onto the islands. The beers are now generally available throughout the north of Scotland, and becoming more common sights in retailers further south.
