Like a high street and farmers’ market under one roof, Whynot? is an inspired idea that works for both shoppers and producers. Jenny Potter and Adam Elder took over an ex-supermarket in late 2013, turning it into multiple hireable spaces for crafters, food producers, furniture makers and anyone else who would like a shop but doesn’t want the overheads. Traders take a stall for any amount of time they want, from a day, to a regular weekly slot, to a permanent presence. They’ve already introduced North Berwick’s first permanent fishmonger and greengrocer, with Edward Collin fish and Knowes Farm Shop taking stalls. There’s also a cafe, serving Union of Genius soup, bread from the Dunbar Bakery, and on-site baker Allison’s cakes.
