Surprisingly comfortable and unpretentious bar with smart staff to guide you through a bewildering array of drams.
You don’t have to be a guest at the Balmoral to stroll straight into Scotch. The bar staff here have clearly won the dream-job prize: they spend their days (well, their mornings – Scotch opens at 2pm) travelling between distilleries to learn and sample, all to help you select the right dram from the 500 in stock. They wear smart Scottish dress, as does the furniture which is mainly comfortable, old-world armchairs with tartan coverings with, of course, a stag’s head on the wall. Food comes from the hotel brasserie kitchen (Hadrian’s closed for a refurbishment in February 2018) so while things are likely to change come the summer, it’s currently focused on sharing platters, sandwiches and a top-notch burger. But if you’d rather focus on the task in hand, simply nibble on dark chocolate and smoked almonds while you decide where to go next on your whisky journey.
Offering Edinburgh's largest collection of whiskies available to the general public, Scotch is a chic bar and lounge within The Balmoral hotel. With a host of both rare and favourite bottles dating back as far as 1940, choose from some of the finest malts, blends and vintages on the market. A team of Whisky Ambassadors are on hand to advise both novices and connoisseurs, and each dram is served with a selection of complementing bar snacks.
