Bright branch of the Edinburgh vegetarian institution, with excellent salads and coffees plus a few kitchen and bathroom items.
Sitting above one of the UK’s oldest vegetarian restaurants (downstairs opened in 1962), the shop and deli part of Hendersons sells bottles of cider vinegar and bamboo toothbrushes for taking home as well as vegan and vegetarian dishes. It’s an eco-friendly alternative to chain deli options for lunch, with a discount if you bring your own container to fill up with vegan coleslaw, olive pesto or whatever fresh salad is on that day, or your own cup for your oat milk mocha or turmeric latte. Hot dishes like balti curry, veggie haggis or broccoli cheese bake can be supersized with two side salads, and there are plenty of sugar-free and gluten-free cakes and tray bakes for the sweet-toothed. If there are seats free, the small, bright sit-in section is a nice place to unwind for a bit too. Just as Hendersons switched a lot of people on to veggie and vegan food back in the day, they’re now working to build momentum for the waste reduction movement. They share discounted pastries, bread and wraps on the Too Good to Go app, have switched their juice bottles from plastic to glass and the takeaway cutlery is compostable.
