So named because owner Margaret Vaughan lives in Heck, a small village near Lockerbie (and because her husband comes from 'by ’eck' country in Yorkshire), By Heck offers a range of small-batch, traditionally cooked jams, jellies and chutneys, with an effort made to source fruit and vegetables locally. Best sellers include rhubarb chutney, good with cheese and cold meats, banana and rum jam – spoon over ice cream or into the base of a steamed pudding – and seasonally available gooseberry & elderflower and crab apple jellies. Her chunky orange marmalade is also very popular, made to an old recipe using molasses in place of some of the sugar. These are sold at farmers' markets around Dumfries & Galloway (Langholm, Moffat, Lockerbie, Kirkcudbright), in local shops and in catering sizes to food-service, and small jars for wedding favours or holiday cottages.
