After an injury put paid to his professional motorcycling career, Magnus Houston accompanied a friend on his lobster boat and immediately knew he’d found his new job. Two years of researching and getting experience in the trade followed, before he bought his own boat with Prince’s Trust funding and savings. He now supplies chefs and home customers, the latter through fish boxes – like the more common veg boxes, these come in three sizes (small only available in Inverness), orders by phone, text or Facebook, and can be delivered weekly, fortnightly or monthly. 95 per cent of produce is sourced from Scotland, 50 per cent within a 40 mile radius: every box is different, but a typical £25 box could include Shetland monkfish, Kinlochbervie halibut, Peterhead haddock, Kinlochbervie plaice, and £35 could get you East Coast kippers, Shetland monkfish, oak smoked haddock, Peterhead haddock, Shetland pollock and Kinlochbervie hake. One of the boxes big selling points is receiving a selection of less common and more sustainable fish, such as whiting, catfish, john dory and red gurnard. All crabs and lobster are creel caught from small boats worked by one or two fishermen working out of harbours including Cromarty, Balintore and Kylesku. Game is a second string to their bow, sourced from a local estate and supplied mainly to hotels and restaurants, though it can be requested in fish boxes also.

Fishbox was started by accident, a motorcycle accident! Magnus Houston founder of Fishbox, swapped his leathers for oilskins after his crash, fishing on his own lobster creel boat. Frustrated that nearly all of the amazing seafood caught off the coast of Scotland was being shipped abroad, Magnus started his mission to get Scotland's top quality fish to the nation through subscription Fishboxes.

Fishboxes come in 3 sizes, Small 6-8 portions £25, Medium 10-12 portions £35 and Large 12-16 portions £45. Boxes can be ordered weekly, fortnightly or monthly and can be delivered across the UK, including the Scottish islands. The contents of each Fishbox is decided by the seas, whatever the fishermen have caught that day. This approach reduces pressure on specific fish stocks and allows customers to try a variety of different species. Customers are able to select their preferences, labeling what they love, like or dislike, so that each box can be personalized for them. Subscription is flexible and recipes are included in each delivery.

Sourcing direct from local markets and independent fishing boats, Fishbox is helping to grow a sustainable home market for Scottish seafood. To discover more go to
