With its opulent oak interiors, Balmakewan is a delightful venue for a cup of good coffee and home-baked cake, a bowl of soup or Sunday roast. They've also made a feature out of surf and turf, listing the day's combination on their Facebook page - it ranges from rump of beef with tempura prawns and rosti potato to pork belly and scallops. The service is friendly and attentive and, due to the cleverly conceived conversion of the coach house, and the readily available newspapers and magazines, it is easy to pop in for a solitary cup of coffee and not feel self-conscious. It is busy at weekends and therefore advisable to book for lunch. The menu uses produce stocked in the farm shop, which though small, has a balanced offering of fresh local produce such as eggs, bread and vegetables and locally made condiments, ales, cakes and cheese.
