As befits it’s West End location, next to a couple of fancy hair salons and a posh gent’s outfitters, La Campagnola is a smart, modern city establishment inside and out, complete with a large dining area and a varied menu that includes Italian dishes, burgers and kebabs – not to mention lunchtime paninis. But while fish suppers might be fried to order at quieter intervals, come busy weekend periods there’s a tendency to cook the haddock in batches, which means if you time it wrong, your meal could well have been left sitting under the lights. The result is dried out fish and below-par batter that has more chew than crunch. Given a similar treatment, chips don’t fare much better either, ending up lukewarm and leathery. It’s a pity too, because options like the Primavera and Diavolo pizzas prove they can hit the heights when they take the time.
