Gorgie Fish Bar
A visit to the chippy on a Saturday night is often the precursor to a night-in in front of the TV but, as light entertainment goes, listening to the staff at the Gorgie Fish Bar banter with the regulars beats Cowell and Co. hands down. Fish is freshly cooked to order too, which allows you ample opportunity to lug in. Once it’s ready, it’s individually wrapped in paper and cellophane so the steam from the chips doesn’t keep cooking it while you get it home. It’s a nice touch, although the plastic packaging still inadvertently leads to problems, rendering the underside of the batter soggy. And even though the huge butterflied haddock fillet looks great, it’s a little on the thin side, and dries out too easily. Chips could be a bit crisper, but are tasty nonetheless, with a downy-soft inside, while the haggis pudding – spicy, earthy and dense – is a treat.
