Cardeans of Meigle
Daz Brooke-Lander has owned and headed the kitchen of this licensed café since the beginning of 2010, when she moved from the Antiquary in Blairgowrie. A member of Perthshire Breakfasts, these take up a big chunk of the menu, with locally sourced ingredients listed below the full Scottish and eggs any way you like. The rest of the menu takes in sandwiches, toasties and jacket tatties, but its the daily three-course lunch specials (served from noon–3pm) that make the most of Brooke-Lander's efforts towards local sourcing. Posted to her Facebook page every day, tips like 'courgettes sourced from Helen's garden', 'Antonia's organic salad' and 'my mate's plums from his tree' are commonplace among traditional meals like roast rib of beef, venison burgers or fresh quiche. Every Sunday high tea (4–5.30pm) follows a hot main with popular home-baking. Part of the Mervat's Village Gallery complex, the building isn't fancy but the interior is neatly presented, and has a small retail corner selling some of the café's favourite Scottish ingredients.
