Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2019/20 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

After its Finnieston-chic and really rather arty chippy proved so successful over the last couple of years, it’s no wonder they extended the frying formula to the stablemate and less-successful US-flavoured Charlie Rocks on Byres Road. Both branches have attractively updated the traditional chippy look, appearing as trendy as any hip café or bar, and both benefit from all-day opening (a breakfast menu is available early) and huge windows, making for entertaining people-watching on both their busy thoroughfares. Fish suppers are a mainstay of the Glasgow diet and few places in town do them better than Old Salty’s. The classic battered fish comes crisp and clean, with good chips, and there are plenty of other options ranging from the traditional such as pies, sausages and black pudding to the more unusual in grilled tiger prawn skewers, ham hough soup and chicken katsu curry. It isn’t the cheapest chippy around – a sit-in fish supper is nearly a tenner, although a fiver will get you a single set-lunch course – but the quality and setting pretty much justifies the outlay.

  • High point: The chippy reinvented
  • Low point: Pricey for a fish supper
  • Average price: £12 (lunch); £12 (dinner)
