James Macfarlane sold up his two AA rosette Highland country house hotel to reinstate Blairgowrie’s old-fashioned high-class grocer, now named the Cornerstone Deli. Affable James’ game-plan in the High Street vs. supermarket battle is to sell the superior foods and wines by small, artisan producers that you can’t find in superstores, at competitive prices. The Deli stocks local specialities, such as Dunkeld Smoked Salmon, Inverawe smoked trout, Rannoch smoked duck and venison, as well as worldly charcuterie from France, Italy and Spain like acorn-fed black Iberian pig. Basque cheeses mingle beside Scottish blues and English cloth-bound truckles, next to shelves of Stornoway’s Stag Bakeries seaweed oatcakes, Perthshire’s Summer Harvest rapeseed oils, and Dornoch’s Saladworx Hebridean seaweed dressings. The back of the shop is a vintner, proffering 170 wines, sherries, champagnes, ports and dessert wines, and James can do local deliveries by arrangement.
