HW Irvine, est. 1922, looks and feels like an old-school, traditional butchers shop, like Cpl. Jones’ in Dad’s Army, decked in picturesque white tiles, a wooden bench for folk to wait for their pound of mince, and a window dressed with farmyard straw, strutting pheasants, and – more seriously – a Scottish Steak Pie Championship cup, won by proud owner Kenny Allan after he took over in 2011. Beside Kenny’s fine scotch pies and bridies, a counter brims with steaks, joints, burgers and sausages of beef and lamb, sourced from local farms at Stirling market, as well as seasonal Perthshire game like partridge, pheasant, duck and venison. HW Irvine's butchers also cure and smoke their own Ayrshire bacon, in one of Scotland’s oldest smokehouses.
