Run by chef-owner Lee Patrick, a Londoner with a number of years' local experience running the kitchen at the Inn on the Tay, this compact and enticing restaurant offers impressive bistro dishes with a strong Scottish flavour. The smart interior, featuring pale tones, ornate white furnishings and chandeliers, offers room for little more than two dozen diners (more in the garden during summer) so can soon fill up with locals and visitors after the friendly welcome and Patrick's imaginative ways with local, seasonal produce – meat from Rennie's Butchers in Forfar (also godfather to Patrick's son), locally farmed lamb, smoked trout from Dunkeld. Flourishes and flair on the plate are underpinned by a home-made menu with wide appeal and generous portions. The good-value set lunch offers the likes of chicken liver parfait, haggis, a succulent steak burger and fish goujons. The evening's more inventive offerings include starters of boudin noir using Stornoway black pudding, and seared pigeon breast, while mains include chunky pies, calf's liver, and Aberdeen Angus steaks, as well as top-quality seafood including hand-dived scallops and smoked haddock.
