The Scrib Tree
Located within the 33,000 acre Douglas Estate, the Scrib Tree is dedicated to showcasing the best and freshest produce the area has to offer. Operating a strict sourcing hierarchy that begins at the estate and works outwards, all food miles are meticulously accounted for by chef and partner John Gold. In one corner of the bright and spacious room stands a neat row of shelves displaying meats, jams and cheeses from local suppliers alongside handcrafted gifts such as pottery, woollens and cards, while at the other Gold serves up a simple but effective menu from his open-plan kitchen. Breakfast is Gold's speciality — options include warm Scottish crumpets, fresh croissants, toast with scrambled eggs and bacon (Ramsay of Carluke) and square sausage and links breakfast rolls of the kind that deserve their own food stall at a boutique festival. During the week breakfast is served between 8am and 11pm – the cafe is open between 10am and 4pm at the weekends – with lunch options of sandwiches, soup and salads overlapping until 3pm. The coffee is Italian Aroma, roasted in Glasgow by the Giambastiani family and ground on-site. Coffee, scones and cake are available all day.
