One among several independent businesses keeping Grantown-on-Spey High Street vibrant, the long-standing Cairngorms Butchers is today in the capable hands of Barry Green, who came full-circle to owning the shop in 2011 after originally serving his apprenticeship here many years ago. Award-winning products include beef and sliced sausage, while their ready-meals and pies (chicken, ham and cheese and spicy Cajun are speciality variants) are popular with caravaners and tourists. Being friendly with a local gamekeeper, they occasionally stock venison, grouse and the like ’straight off the hill’ depending what’s in season. There’s an emphasis on first-name-basis customer service, and at all times presenting a friendly, quality, good-value alternative to big supermarkets. Local deliveries in the valley are always possible, and are made by Barry’s (mostly) retired father – ’keeps him busy,’ says Green.
