After years of flooding in the late 80s and early 90s almost destroyed his farm, Alastair MacLennan – who has lived most of his life on Balliefurth – strove to make an opportunity from adversity by building a new, locally unique kind of business. One integrating farming, forestry, the environment and tourism (there are several holiday homes on his land) for the mutual benefit of all. All livestock, beef and lamb, is grass-fed and carefully bred (every calf is born on the farm – you can even visit them for a look if you like) – so complete traceability is guaranteed. Shorthorn beef is hung for a month. Most of MacLennan’s sales are done direct-to-customer from Balliefurth, and as the founder and current chair of Cairngorms Farmers' Market, you’ll usually find him there too.
