The Macaskills are the third generation of the family to farm at Balvicar. Though free range hens are the mainstay, the farm also runs suckler cows, a flock of Blackface and Cross Leicester sheep and produce oysters intertidally in Seil Sound off their shoreline. The hens can scratch around outside all day and retire at the end of their working life, meaning there's not the mass cull most commercial operations are forced to carry out. They are rigorously immunised against and checked for all the big threats, including salmonella throughout their laying period, and fed additive-free grain milled in Inverness, supplemented with the farm's own seaweed and barnacled oyster shells. Balvicar supply door to door, and to guest houses, hotels, butchers, dairies, fruit and veg wholesalers, delicatessens and local shops. Waltons, Oban’s main chilled foods distribution company, also delivers Balvicar's eggs throughout the Islands, Perth and the Lothians.
