A recently freshened-up Westender brimming with strong flavours and rambunctious vibes from the Deep South, USA.
Fresh from a revamp, Bar Gumbo continues to hearten locals with delights of the South United States, now in a more luminous and modern setting. The hallmark wooden floors and wall panels are still here, but the brighter colours, discreeter décor and street-level views of Byres Road bring a much welcome dose of suave. Comprising two almost completely separate spaces, the restaurant makes room for live music and loud laughs – staying stalwart to the rambunctious roots of New Orleans – as well as calmer, casual meals. The menu strikes a good balance between the meat and seafood offerings of the American South. The flagship Louisiana spicy stews with tomato sauce abound, as well as multifarious grilled gems, from a supple buttermilk chicken starter to steaks with a wonderfully charred finish. And yes, there is a good deal of famed – and infamous – fried Southern goodies. But using fresh, locally sourced produce, Bar Gumbo elevates these ostensibly predictable and heavy dishes into nibbles of a higher order.
